Renaissance Of The U.S. LNG Industry

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is emerging as an important source of natural gas in the United States. In New England, it currently supplies 20% of all gas demand. As gas consump-tion continues to grow at a rapid pace, driven by power generation, and gas price surge, the national share of LNG is projected to rise from around 1% in 2000 to 3% - 4% by 2010.rnTwo receiving terminals, mothballed since the 1970s, are slated to reopen in 2002, bringing the total number of operating facilities to five. Their current combined capacity is around 2.8 Bcf/d, which could be raised to 4.5 Bcf/d with moderate upgrades. Meanwhile, U.S. companies are becoming a driving force in the growth of an LNG spot market and are spearheading the movement toward more flexible and rational models in the global LNG industry.
