摘要

The considerable success of the dramatic economic reforms introduced in 1991 by the then Finance Minister and the current Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has led to great interest among economists and regional scientists in studying the role that economic growth can play in reducing poverty particularly and in improving the lives of people more generally. In this book, the distinguished Columbia University economists Jagdish Bhagwati and Arvind Panagariya show themselves to be unabashed champions of economic growth and policies that promote growth. Focusing on India almost exclusively, the authors use the 17 chapters of this book to explain with vigour and verve why growth matters. In the remainder of this review, I shall sample eclectically from the book's contents. This ought to give the reader a good sense for the intellectual contributions of the book.
