Any combination of two or more foods simmered in a liquid can be regarded as a stew. Stews have been made since prehistoric times. There is evidence that primitive tribes boiled various foods together as a prelude to mating rituals. There are recipes for lamb stews and fish stews in a Roman cookery book, believed to date back to the 4th century.
