Benchmarks for social justice: assessing the fairness of academic conference participation

These disparities represent injustices that have become primary sources of conflict between and within countries (Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, 1998). Most broadly, the term social justice means fair distribution of society's benefits, responsibilities and their consequences (Rawls, 1985; Kass, 2001; Morris, 2002; De Cock, 2002). It relates to the extent that disparities exist between sub-groups within a population, what the root causes of those disparities are, and what can be done to eliminate them (Aday et al., 1999).
