That may sound like a harsh judgment, but the East Coast marketer who made it learned the hard way how much such negligence can cost. Last year, his Baltimore retailers lost thousands of dollars worth of fuel when thieves reprogrammed their dispensers to put them in stand-alone mode and then fill up for free. The marketer wasn't alone in his pain -jobbers in Houston and Los Angeles fell victim to the same scheme when thieves used easily obtainable keys to open up dispensers and get at the keypads stored within. It was then a simple matter of tapping in the manager's access code to reprogram the pump, as exclusively reported (OE 05/02/05, OE05/09/05, OE08/29/05).
