Recent U.S. registration data show that diesel-powered light-duty vehicles comprise about 2.8% of some 253 million passenger vehicles in the country, the Diesel Technology Forum said. On a comparable basis, hybrid vehicles make up only 1.1% of the total. In its analysis of fuel-efficient vehicle data obtained by R.L. Polk, the diesel-focused educational non-profit group touted a 6.2% increase in all diesel passenger vehicle registrations during 2013 while the overall market rose 4.4%. From 2010 through 2013, diesel registrations rose 11.5% versus 1.6% in the overall market. The passenger vehicle category used in the study included cars, SUVs, pickup trucks and vans. "Workhorse" pickups and vans gave diesel a decided edge in Diesel Technology Forum's study of consumer adoption of clean diesel and hybrid passenger vehicles.
