Legal: Supreme Court OKs mandatory arbitration contracts

Employers can require workers to use individual arbitration instead of class action lawsuits to resolve their grievances on the job, the U.S. Supreme Court decided on May 21. The court’s 5-4 decision is based on a review of three cases on mandatory arbitration that were consolidated, including National Labor Relations Board v. Murphy Oil USA Inc. In each case, workers signed contracts requiring individual arbitration to resolve employment disputes.
