Automatic monitoring is an important topic in traffic telematics. There is much effort done in visual monitoring, but few in acoustic monitoring, which is covered by this journal. There are several approaches to get data of this modality: intelligent monitoring of noise emissions of railway and aircrafts as well as using sound sources for detecting object properties or special events, e.g. accidents in tunnels, motorisation or number of axles of passing vehicles.
