Employees are still unsure about talking to their employer about their mental health, a survey of attitudes towards mental illness has found. 42% of employees said they would feel uncomfortable talking to their employer about their mental health, for example, telling them they have a mental health diagnosis and how it affects them. Findings from Attitudes to Mental Illness 2011, a survey carried out for the first time in England 17 years ago, also suggest that more people now view mental health as an illness like any other though less favourable views on some issues still exist. For example, one in six people believe a main cause of mental illness is lack of self-discipline and will-power - a view held at about the same level as when the survey was first conducted in 1994.
