FIT NOTES ENGAGE EMPLOYEES

The fit note is prompting managers and employees to have more open conversations about returning to work from sick leave, according to new analysis of the findings from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) 2011 absence management survey {OH at Work 2011; 8(4): 8). More than half of employers (52%) agree that the introduction of the fit note in April 2010 has enabled line managers to start a dialogue about absence and health issues with their staff. Overall, 87% of respondents taking part in the survey have used the fit note in their organisation but its use was less common in small businesses of less than 50 employees (54%). Just under a third of organisation (31%) agreed that the fit note helps line managers to manage absence more effectively.
