Overview of the Expert: Recommendations for the Assessment, Prevention, and Treatment of Child and Adolescent Overweight and Obesity

The obesity epidemic continues in most countries ofnthe westernized world. Increasing scientific attentionnhas resulted in an expanding body of literaturenabout the etiology, comorbidities, and treatment of childhoodnobesity. The condition, however, remains frustratingnand difficult to treat. As a result, an expert committee madenup of representatives from 15 health professional organizationsnwas convened by the American Medical Associationnand cofunded in collaboration with the U.S. Department ofnHealth and Human Services’ Health Resources and ServicenAdministration and the Centers for Disease Control andnPrevention. The expert committee, by design, was multidisciplinarynand contained individuals from medicine, nutrition,nnursing, psychology, and epidemiology. The committee wasnalways sensitive to the interests of diverse cultural groups.
