Chinese vendors seek to supply Bangladesh's second nuclear plant

Bangladesh with its second nuclear plant, government officials have said.China State Construction Engineering Corp. submitted a proposalin early April to the state-run Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission,or BAEC, to construct the second nuclear plant, a senior BAEC officialsaid. Another Chinese firm, Dongfang Electric Corp., has also showninterest in that project, he said.The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internaldiscussions with potential vendors.Russia's Atomstroyexport, the contractor of Bangladesh’s 2,400-MWRooppur nuclear power plant, is also eager to secure the contract forthe second plant, the official said.“None of the proposals are being considered seriously yet as weare yet to select a prospective site for the country’s second nuclearpower plant,” Yeafesh Osman, minister of the Ministry of Science andTechnology said in an interview April 29. “We need to scrutinize the proposals as well as select a prospective site before making anydecision,” he said.
