Georgia regulators begin hearings on Vogtle's fate

The Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) on November 6 began hearings to determine the future of the Vogtle nuclear power plant construction project. The hearings, part of the 17th Vogtle Construction Monitoring Report, will update the project's economic performance in the wake of the bankruptcy filing of its main contractor, Westinghouse Electric Company (NN, Apr. 2017, p. 17). On August 31, Southern Company subsidiary Georgia Power, Oglethorpe Power, MEAG Power, and Dalton Utilities-the owners of the two AP1000 reactors under construction near Waynesboro, Ga.-filed their recommendations to continue with construction, based on a comprehensive schedule, cost-to-complete, and cancellation assessment (NN, Sept. 2017, p. 17). The PSC expects to issue a decision on the future of the project on February 6, according to a revised schedule approved in September (NN, Oct. 2017, p. 17).
