Georgia regulators to wait until Vogtle nuclear plant completion to assess further cost recovery

Georgia regulators unanimously approved a plan to significantly alter how cost overruns are handled for the Alvin W. Vogtle Nuclear Plant expansion during an Aug. 17 meeting. Under the new agreement between the Georgia Public Service Commission and Southern Co. subsidiary Georgia Power Co., regulators will continue to review the power plant's semi-annual progress reports but will wait until the plant expansion is complete before determining whether the project's runaway expenses are "reasonable or prudent" and whether those costs can be recovered from ratepayers.
