Oma go-ahead

On 23 April, Japanese utility the Electric Power Development Corporation, more commonly referred to as J-Power, received authorisation from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to install a 1383MWe ABWR at its Oma nuclear power station. The reactor is to be the world's first unit to run fully on mixed oxide (MOX) fuel. Following the METI authorisation, J-Power applied to the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA) for a constructionrnpermit. Once the construction permit is issued - expected to be this month - the start of construction will mark the end of a 32-year process to gain approval for a nuclear plant in Oma, a small fishing town located in Shimokita district, Aomori prefecture, on the northern-most point of Honshu island.
