With approximately 76 per cent of electricity generated from nuclear power stations (390000 GWh (e) for the year 2009), France is the nation with the world's highest proportion of nuclear power production. A significant number of nuclear power plants in France were commissioned more than 30 years ago, with 58 still operating and 12 shut down having already been decommissioned or awaiting decommission.
