When Lobsang Sangay was sworn in as the next prime minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile last week to take over the Dalai Lama's political duties, it marked a significant step-but just one of many-in a succession that will be especially delicate. Beijing doesn't like Sangay, a 43-year-old Harvard-trained legal scholar: his father belonged to the Chushi Gangdruk freedom fighters, who fought Beijing during the '50s, and he has himself shown a confrontational streak. "Within my lifetime, Tibetans need to assert their identity or they might become museum pieces," Sangay told NEWSWEEK.
