New Zealand and Australia pride themselves on their egalitarian history; being classless societies where everyone gets a fair go and where people are the masters of their own fate. Nick Cater, a senior editor with The Australian, believes this culture of egalitarianism is under threat. Cater's new book The Lucky Culture -The Rise of a New Ruling Class observes how since the 1970s a new tertiary-educated class of people has emerged that not only thinks its education bestows better academic skills, but crucially also a sense of moral superiority over fellow citizens.
