Nune Lemaire stares down at a small black mouse that is sitting in a white plastic tub. The graduate student from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge reaches over to a heavy metal box, from which a thin, clear wire travels to a device mounted on the mouse's head. She flips a switch and the top of the mouse's skull glows blue. The animal begins walking quickly in anticlockwise circles until Lemaire flips the laser off. On cue, the mouse stops walking, brushes its whiskers and resumes sniffing.
