BATTERY SHUNTERS FOR DBS

Db schenker has announced that it is to introduce battery-operated electric shunters at its maintenance depots at Crewe and Toton. The Zephir 1800e CRAB machines are expected to reduce CO_2 emissions by 649 tonnes each year.They are capable of pulling or pushing 400 tonnes with a maximum drawbar pull of 20 kilonewtons in dry conditions, meaning they will be capable of moving up to three Class 66 locomotives. DBS recently decommissioned the majority of its Class 08 shunting fleet, instead opting to use main line locomotives to undertake shunting work where required.
