The nation was shocked by front-page pictures of a child lying dead on a beach in Turkey, one of many thousands of people dying in tragic circumstances as they desperately attempt to escape the war-torn Middle East to the security of Europe. It marked a turning point in the sentiment towards how refugees should be treated. Until then, the official government line was essentially that the UK was 'full'. Prime minister David Cameron stressed that taking more refugees would not solve the problem which lay in the countries the asylum-seekers came from. By coincidence - or perhaps with a politician's instinct - Labour Party leadership hopeful Yvette Cooper put forward a different view only a short time before the horrifying pictures appeared.
