Concerns over VOA's ability to manage 'deluge' of rates appeals

Council treasurers have questioned whether the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) will be able to cope with the potential 'deluge' of rates appeals after the forthcoming revaluation. Four out of five of those who responded to a recent government consultation on 100% business rates retention highlighted issues with the performance of the VOA, which has fallen victim to recent budget cuts. However, VOA officials are hopeful that the new business rates appeals process - dubbed Check, Challenge, Appeal - will reduce the number of cases that land on their desk.
