The Audit Commission has hit back at claims by the housing minister that it had wasted ￡53,000 on office chairs. The commission challenged Grant Shapps, who claimed the watchdog had gone on a shopping spree which included designer chairs costing up to ￡900 each. Mr Shapps said: 'This kind of casual attitude to spending taxpayers' cash undermines faith in the public sector.'
