Council rejects seven-district unitary authority bid

Members of North Yorkshire CC's Conservative-controlled executive have rejected out of hand calls to establish a unitary authority encompassing the county's seven district and borough councils. North Yorkshire UKIP councillors have demanded a referendum on the proposal they said 'was a serious and sensible option' that would wipe out at a stroke a 'huge swathe of bureaucracy'. UKIP member, Cllr David Simister said: 'One large council would need one chief executive instead of eight and one set of directors instead of eight.' But, Conservative North Yorkshire executive member Cllr Gareth Dadd, said it 'would become a flight of fantasy to pursue a proposal communities secretary Eric Pickles has already said he won't consider'.
