Ministers seek to extend data transparency beyond spending

Councils could be forced to release datasets revealing their inner workings and make disclosure of information their default position, subject to a Whitehall consultation on data transparency. Following the department' s publication of the final Code of recommended practice for local authorities - which outlines three core principles of timeliness, openness and mindfulness of local demand - ministers believe transparency measures should extend beyond local spending.
