The Federal Trade Commission released a report May 27 on the data broker industry, calling for Congress to consider legislation to make the industry's practices more transparent and to give consumers more control over the personal information that data brokers collect and share. In Data Brokers: A Call for Transparency and Accountability, the FTC found that data brokers collect customer data from a wide range of offline and online sources, typically without the knowledge of consumers. The data covers purchases, social media activity, subscriptions, religious and political affiliations, and other details of consumers' daily lives, the FTC found.
