Councillors hold an office that few of their voters understand, care much about, or feel that they would miss if it were gone. Indeed many, including politicians at other levels and some councillors themselves, would like to see fewer and fewer councillors across the country. We are currently in the grip of an anti-councillor public mood, which some are capitalising on to further undermine the office and those that hold it. The main strength of the office of councillor is also its weakness: proximity to the public. Councillors are part of their local communities, they live, rest, play and often work within tire communities they represent They are close to fee people that they govern and serve, they are accessible to their communities and local people and they are on call 24-hours-a-day.
