An influential committee of MPs today publishes a damning assessment of the Government"s approach to tackling regional deprivation. In a scathing critique of the coalition's early attempts to tackle the 'complex problems faced by Britain's most deprived' areas, the communities and local government select committee warns ministers risk creating a deprivation time-bomb, if they fail to find additional resources for effective regeneration programmes soon. The MPs warn ministers and officials have too often confused their desire for local regeneration with a policy focus on the wider issue of economic growth. Just two days after the Office for National Statistics published further evidence of Britain's economic malaise -with growth rates for June-September 2011 reaching just 0.5% - the committee reports the coalition lacks strategic direction' on regeneration.
