Shadow local government secretary Caroline Spelman has vowed to scrap the sector's regional leaders boards.Ms Spelman's clarified her party's stance on the boards in a letter to The MJ, printed on page 12 this week.Recent articles in The MJ's news section and Diary column pointed out the Conservatives' manifesto pledge to scrap the 'elected regional assemblies', which became defunct from 1 April this year.But, in a strongly-worded rebuttal, the Conservative Party's lead on local government issued a stinging attack of what she described as a 'sham re-branding exercise'.
