Engine numbers

Many original untouched Mini engines will retain their engine numbers but occasionally they do fall off. As a general rule, if the number is missing the engine has likely been messed with or repaired or modified in some way. Sometimes the alloy plate corrodes and the number may be difficult to read. If it is present and legible it will reveal a lot about the engine. The subject of engine numbers is massive and it would take many pages to de-code everything and list all the variations - and that is just for those for which information is available. Having said that, the first part of the engine number in most cases will identify the capacity of the unit and give an idea as to which model of Mini the engine originated from.
