A fresh start

Recently I have been working on ancillaries for the two engines that I have currently under way. Having had a slow-to-turn starter on the yellow Mini 1 decided to check out the starter from my original 998 and another from a 1968 MG 1300. The starters were fitted to engines made four years apart and the MG unit is the earlier 3SG whereas the 998 is the 35J. You can see the difference in the pictures here. I know that both were working when the engines were removed from the cars but I wanted to make sure this is still the case. I tested them using a jump-start pack and both still spin happily. The MG bendix spring was very weak and there was quite a bit of rust on the shaft under the bendix gear; the result of being stored in a damp garage (not mine) for a number of years.
