Executives in paper recycling, aluminum and plastics discussed market trends at the Resource Recycling Conference held late last month in Louisville, Kentucky. World recovered paper demand will continue to grow in 2013-2016, explained Bill Moore of Moore & Associates. "Containerboard will account for more than 60 percent of the total demand increase. Old Corrugated Containers (OCC) will register the largest Recovered Paper (RCP) tonnage gains, and Mixed Paper demand may also grow as the cheaper substitute," he explained. Moore noted future demand trends for OCC. "China's huge appetite for OCC drives the world price. Over the next five plus years, we may see unbleached kraft pulp be competitive with OCC especially at the top of the pricing cycles in China - but supply of the grade is limited and expensive. New OCC based containerboard mill projects [are coming online] in Europe and North America," he said.
