Executives in paper recycling, plastics and aluminum discussed market trends at the Resource Recycling Conference held earlier this month in New Orleans, Louisiana. Operational issues for MRFs starts at the curb when collection occurs, explained Shawn State of Pratt Industries. "Recyclables need to be clean, dry, and free of contaminates. Wet material does not separate well," he explained. If wet material gets into curbside recycling, the quality of the fiber is directly impacted. MRFs have to look into pre-sort and quality control labor, as well as technology and maintenance for sorting out fiber from other recyclables.
