Opportunities open up in new EU package

By the time this is published, the Commission's proposals for liberalising the labelling rules for liquid milk should have passed their final institutional hurdle and been published in the Official Journal, with a probable implementation date of January 1 next year. The changes to the rules governing liquid milk are part of the Commission's mini-package for the dairy sector. Under the existing rules, only product with certain specified fat contents can use the term milk. They are skimmed milk with 0-0.5% fat, semi-skimmed milk with 1.5-1.8% and whole milk with 3.5% and above. This framework created a series of dead zones in which milk falling between these ranges could not be marketed as milk.
