America's founding document, the Declaration of Independence, profoundly proclaims the preeminent principle for justice-we are all created equal. But what is the moment of creation? And what rights exist at that moment? Forty years ago, the United States Supreme Court wrestled with the question of when life begins and concluded that consensus did not exist. Today, consensus exists. Significantly, the 1973 Supreme Court opinion anticipates that consensus may one day exist.
