Chemistry is the science of matter, the science of life. It is also the science of metal finishing and of pollution control. It deals with the air we breathe, the water we drink, and minerals and other important materials that are found in the soil in which we grow our food. Even our bodies contain a vast number of chemical substances. Many minerals, even some that are considered toxic, are vital to human life. This article concentrates largely on the chemistry of water and wastewater. Some knowledge of chemistry is needed to understand anodizing, electroplating, and wastewater treatment processes. Most people have had little or no training in chemistry, and most of those who have had some stopped with high-school chemistry. The information presented here is intended to impart some fundamental principles of chemistry for the nonchemist with a minimum of big words or complex ideas. The knowledge gained will help you to become a better operator, but it won't make you a chemist.
