摘要

It is known that when high-energy radiation passes through matter, energy is transferred to the target by ionization and excitation processes. Subsequently, any number of processes can and do occur, depending on the ionization density. Part I of this report is a summary of the mechanisms which can take place leading to the observed effects in radiation chemistry studies. The discussion is limited somewhat by a lack of knowledge of the extent to which the various secondary processes take place in a given system. It is possible, however, to discuss things which have been observ¬ed and the conditions under which certain processes are known to take place, processes which should be considered in studying any new system.
