Developed by Native American Family Foods, based at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, the Tanka Bar marries two unlikely foods: dried buffalo meat and cranberries. While the thought of snapping into a the fruity-savory, jerky type energy bar (which is smoked for nine hours, according to the company) hardly makes our mouths water, demand is apparently brisk. Since launching the product in October of 2007, the company's production has quadrupled and distributors are shipping to retailers that include Walgreens and Sunshine Foods in addition to tourist-based gift shops based near sites such as the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
