Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) was first reported in 1982 by Nyman and it is a technique to prevent the dentogingival epithelium and the gingival connective tissue from reaching contact with the curetted root surface during periodontal surgery and to promote the growth of progenitor bone and periodontal ligament cells by a barrier membrane. The GTR technique has been proven to be an effective modality in periodontal therapy. Other researchers employed this barrier membrane technique to guide bone regeneration in the bone defect site and proposed the term of 'GBR'. General requirements for the barrier membranes with excellent biocompatibility in GTR process should have suitable mechanical properties, stability and optimal porosity. Porous structure both at the surface and sublayer of the membranes is essential for the cellular adaptation and sufficient nutrients permeation.
