Trade politics and the global production of canned tuna

Using the case of canned tuna, this article shows that EU and US tariff regimes profoundly influence the location of processing activities, thereby shaping the international division of labour. It argues that the impact of trade preferences and tariff liberalization cannot be adequately understood without taking into consideration the particular characteristics and circumstances of individual countries. One-size-fits-all policy prescriptions based on generalized assumptions about the functioning of the world economy cannot provide an adequate development policy framework. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd.
