It's deja vue all over again. Shipowners know that regluations are on the way that will make double hulls mandatory for larger bulkers. But, just as in the period before double hull requirements were imposed for tankers, nobody's quite sure what the new rules will require. Which , makes life a little tricky if you're contemplating a newbuilding. Classification society Bureau Veritas has given preliminary approval to three designs for double-hull bulk carriers that are expected to meet future revisions to IACS and IMO regulations. The designs, two for cape-sizes and one for a panamax bulk currier, will all withstand the flooding of each individual cargo hold and side space, and have increased longitudinal strength required to meet the anticipated revisions to IACS unified requirements S17 (longitudinal strength), S18 (transverse bulkheads) and S20 (double-bottom).
