Albina Engine & Machine Works was founded in 1904 as a machine shop, by William Cornfoot, a merchant mariner from Kirkcaldy, Scotland. It developed into being a repair yard and began building ships in World War I, turning out 17 small cargo ships for the U.S. Shipping Board. In the lean inter-war years, it reverted to repair work while keeping active in shipbuilding with a string of tugs and other small vessels, including three lightships for the Coast Guard.
