MarAd report: U.S.-flag fleet costs significantly higher than foreign flag

A recently released report from the U.S. Maritime Administration (MarAd) says that U.S. flag crew cost was roughly 5.3 times higher than foreign-flag vessels in 2010. The report examines the factors that significantly impact the competitiveness of U.S.- flag vessel in inter-national transportation markets-most notably the difference between U.S. and foreign flag operating costs. The analysis also revealed that the total average cost of operating a U.S.- flag vessel in foreign trade is estimated to be 2.7 times higher than its foreign counterpart.
