'Regal Princess' becomes first cruise ship to retrofit ballast water treatment plant

Princess Cruises' Regal Princess has become the first ship to install a ballast water treatment plant based on separation and UV technology to get rid of alien species. The companies involved in supplying the treatment package are US-based Hyde Marine Inc and Norwegian manufacturer OptiMarin Marketing A/S. Both say this is the first retrofit of its kind onboard a cruise ship. The system is designed to remove and destroy/inactivate biological organisms including zooplankton, algae, and bacteria from ballast water without affecting the normal operation of the ship.
