BALLAST WATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGIES: Including a Review of Initial Testing and Lessons Learned Aboard the Regal Princess

The paper briefly reviews the regulatoryrnenvironment and various methods for ballastrnwater management. It examines the severalrntechnologies that could be used for on boardrntreatment of ballast water. Particularrnattention is paid to the treatment of ballastrnwater using a solids separation primaryrntreatment and UV light secondary treatmentrnsystem. The installation of an OptiMarrnBallast Treatment system aboard the cruisernship Regal Princess is discussed. Thernresults of testing of the system both prior tornand after the full-scale shipboard installationrnare presented. Lessons learned from thernRegal Princess and other testing arerndiscussed.
