Years ago, when the very large crude carrier was thrusting its brutal form into the maritime world, there was endless argument in all the technical journals about how these monsters, once they had worked their huge mass up to full sea speed, would ever be stopped. The phrase 'turning a supertanker around' had yet to enter the universal Lexicon, but there were serious people who seemed to think that these monstrous vessels could not be slowed and brought to a halt in any sort of reasonable distance.
