Forthis issue of The Marine Professional I'm choosing to talk about a topic very close to my heart. The skills gap has been in the spotlight for a while now, and the IMarEST and this magazine have done much to champion this cause. However, the lack of women in the sector is an elephant in the room, one that we continue to ignore at our peril. While there has been a lot of talk about diversity agendas, this is yet to result in any concrete dividends. Being at sea is a harsh environment - particularly for women, who while not being seen as equals, are required to work just as hard if not harderthan men. Although our numbers are increasing, there is still a 'leaky pipeline' and many slip out of the industry before they can reach senior positions.
