Software is increasingly being used to tutor seafarers in methods for avoiding vessel collisions and groundings, improving maritime safety. Computer based training (CBT) can be used to teach officers to utilise many types of ecdis equipment as well as advanced navigation techniques. The subject of ecdis training is discussed in greater depth in the latest edition of The Complete Guide to Ecdis 2015, which accompanies this issue of Marine Electronics & Communications. Navigational training company Ecdis Ltd has started using new simulation and software training technology to teach trainees about the latest changes in the international regulations for preventing collisions at sea (Colregs). The UK-based company uses projectors in a classroom to demonstrate various potential collision situations and explain the correct manoeuvres according to Colregs. Using the software, instructors have the ability to continuously change the Colregs situation, in a variety of meteorological conditions, for any vessel. The program provides instructors with a method of showing the situation from any aspect on board the vessel, such as views from the port or starboard side of the bridge, or the helm position. Other simulated aspects include bird's-eye and free orbital views. Assessors and the students can also choose which aspect to use during the simulation.
