Designing for operational circumstances tequires a thorough understanding of the owners business targets and related values, an adequate description of day-to-day operations and the ability to quantify the relevant aspects of ship behaviour in all of these circumstances. For a long time a lack of numerical tools to address the latter two problems proved a major obstacle in quantitative "design for service". However, the situation is now changing. Not only because of a growing understanding of many aspects of ship behaviour and the development of robust numerical tools that reflects this new insight but also the advent of powerful tools to create a detailed picture of operational performance.
