MSC Cruises is to commit to servicing its Mediterranean fleet at the Palumbo Malta Shipyard after entering into a joint venture with the Palumbo Group. The cruise ship company has taken a 50% stake in the shipyard, which operates one of the biggest drydocks in Europe, with Italy's Palumbo Group keeping the remaining half of the shareholding. A statement issued after the deal was announced indicated that a major upgrade is now planned for the shipyard to support its specialist cruise line activities and improve operational and environmental efficiency. In particular, the yard plans to introduce technology to allow for the servicing and repair of the next generation of LNG-powered cruise ships that are being built for the MSC fleet.
